SBA 2027 Awards: Florida Owners Face a Dec. 7 Deadline

SBA's 2027 awards accept self nominations, but category rules matter. South Florida owners should check eligibility before assembling a nomination for the December 7 deadline.

The paperwork comes before the podium. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has opened nominations for its 2027 National Small Business Week awards, with submissions due Monday, December 7, 2026, at 3 p.m. Eastern. Owners can nominate themselves. National Small Business Week runs from Sunday, May 2, to Saturday, May 8, 2027, according to the agency's October announcement.

A deadline for the business behind the brand

For South Florida owners considering an application, the useful first step is choosing the right category. SBA's awards directory separates the main business owner award from exporter, manufacturer, veteran, rural, blue collar and disaster recovery categories. It also links district office awards. Their rules should not be treated as interchangeable.

Florida has its own layer. SBA's South Florida District Office, with its main office at 51 SW 1st Ave., Suite 201, in Miami (305-536-5521), serves Miami-Dade and Broward from Miami and Palm Beach County through its Ft. Pierce virtual office. It runs district awards on the same Dec. 7, 3 p.m. ET deadline: Woman Business Owner of the Year, Small Business Advocate of the Year and Small Business Community Partner of the Year. The North Florida District Office runs its own district awards, and its winners are judged against South Florida's for the state title.

Check eligibility before writing

For Small Business Person of the Year, SBA requires qualifying ownership, at least three years operating a small business, federal obligations in good standing and prior SBA assistance. That assistance can include counseling through SCORE or a Small Business Development Center (SBDC), rather than a loan. Citizenship or nationality and residence requirements also apply. Read the full category requirements and exclusions before investing time in a submission.

The practical distinction is important: a strong business story does not replace eligibility. Start by matching the company to the rules, then collect evidence supporting its nomination.

Assemble evidence, then submit

The main award instructions call for background and nomination forms, a materials release, a photograph and supporting documentation. Submission is electronic through SBA's 2027 BOX upload link. The nomination goes as one document, with the photograph separate. Incomplete nominations are not considered.

Treat the exercise as a business evidence file: organize records first, write the narrative second and leave time to check the final upload. The agency's general rules require English submissions and prohibit an individual or team from entering more than one award category. Nominees also face background checks.

Recognition has a marketing dimension. SBA describes a national celebration, possible agency media coverage and a media opportunities kit for winners. Those are opportunities for honorees, not guaranteed exposure for every applicant, under the published recognition details.

Key Facts for Owners and Search

When are nominations due?

Nominations for the 2027 National Small Business Week awards are due by 3 p.m. Eastern on Monday, December 7, 2026, according to SBA. Nominations go electronically through the agency's 2027 BOX upload link, and incomplete nominations will not be considered, so owners should leave time to check every form and attachment before the cutoff.

Can an owner nominate themselves?

Yes. SBA's announcement and the Small Business Person of the Year rules both permit self nominations. A self nomination still has to meet every category requirement, including 51 percent ownership, at least three years operating the business and prior SBA assistance, and it must include the required forms, a photograph and supporting documentation.

Does the main award require an SBA loan?

No. Small Business Person of the Year nominees need at least one type of SBA assistance, and the category rules list examples such as an SBA loan, SCORE counseling and Small Business Development Center assistance. Help from a Veterans Business Outreach Center or a Women's Business Center also appears on the list, so a loan is one route among several.

Can an applicant enter several categories?

No. The general rules say individuals or teams may not be nominated for more than one National Small Business Week award category. Owners should compare the main award with the exporter, manufacturer, veteran, rural, blue collar and disaster recovery categories, then choose the single best fit before building a nomination. All nominations must be submitted in English.

When is National Small Business Week 2027?

National Small Business Week runs from Sunday, May 2, to Saturday, May 8, 2027, according to the SBA announcement. The agency describes a national celebration for honorees, along with possible media coverage and a media opportunities kit for winners. Those benefits apply to selected honorees rather than to every applicant who submits a nomination.
