If your festival map usually stops at Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca, and Gulf-coast prestige rooms, Thursday, October 15, 2026 is the fee rung that opens a different Florida lane: the Vero Beach Film Festival on the Treasure Coast, running April 8–11, 2027. From today (Monday, September 21, 2026), Regular is about twenty-four days out — enough runway to pick the honest category, finish a clean screener, write the cover letter the festival actually asks for, and pay the published Regular Standard fee before Late (November 30), Extended (December 31), and Final (February 1, 2027) climb.
This is not a Miami rewrite and not a FLIFF twin. Vero Beach is an east-coast / Treasure Coast room with FilmFreeway Top 100 positioning, Huffington Post “Summer Sundance” language on the festival’s own call copy, and owner-relevant lanes Broward–Palm Beach shops often underweight: statewide NEXT UP! Florida student doors, a dedicated Pilots category, and The Fringe for work that does not fit standard feature/short cards. Lanes that matter for Broward–Palm Beach shops
Live FilmFreeway lists ten categories. Match the cut before you pay — do not force geography or student status you cannot defend.
Narrative Feature / Documentary Feature — category cards ask for features 50 minutes or longer. Open to original narrative work and compelling nonfiction; all genres welcomed on the Narrative card. Regular Standard is the feature floor for this map.
Comedy / Dramatic / Documentary Short Films — live cards: shorts under 25 minutes. Comedy wants humor and freshness; Dramatic wants emotional connection; Documentary Short wants real people, moments, and perspectives. Same Regular Standard ladder across the three short cards.
NEXT UP! Florida Youth Student Films (K–12) — Florida-only student lane, up to 20 minutes. Open to elementary, middle, and high school students and recent graduates; film must be completed while enrolled in K–12 and may be submitted up to one year after high school graduation. Student must have attended a Florida K–12 school (public, private, or homeschool) at production. Valid student ID or approved homeschool documentation required. Narrative, documentary, animation, or comedy.
NEXT UP! University Student Films — Florida-only, up to 20 minutes. Florida-based university students (associate, bachelor’s, or graduate) and Florida residents attending out-of-state schools are considered. Completed while enrolled; submit within one year after graduation. Valid student ID required. This is the cheap statewide student door SoFla film programs should put on the same October 15 card as feature/short Regular.
The Fringe — up to 60 minutes for bold, unconventional work: music videos, web series, VR, social media stories, animation, experimental, mid-length (25–50 minutes), or anything that does not fit standard cards. Festival notes it may reassign Fringe entries into a natural fit category. Use Fringe when the honest form is unconventional — not as a dump lane for a clean comedy short that belongs on the Comedy card.
Pilots — dedicated episodic lane for completed, standalone pilot episodes meant for television or streaming. Short-form pilots under 30 minutes; long-form pilots 30–60 minutes. Live card: do not mask a pilot as a short — screen it among episodic creators. Digital series bible or lookbook may accompany the FilmFreeway link. If the cut is truly a pilot, pay the Pilots card, not Fringe-as-shortcut.
Vero Visions — Treasure Coast & Space Coast shorts up to 20 minutes. Eligible films must be created by filmmakers from Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie, and Brevard Counties, or feature local people, stories, or subject matter unique to that area. Broward and most Palm Beach shops do not default into this lane unless the Treasure Coast / Space Coast connection is real and defensible. Martin County shops sitting on the Palm Beach–Treasure Coast edge should read the live card carefully before claiming it.
Operator rule: one honest category is better than two invented ones. FilmFreeway Rules say films may be considered for multiple categories or re-categorized by programming if a better fit is identified — only one submission is needed, and a cover letter should flag other possible fits.

Rules that change the submit decision
FilmFreeway Rules & Guidelines (live pull for this package) that owners should clear before paying:
- Submit via FilmFreeway with a working screening link; complete contact info; cover letters strongly encouraged.
- Premiere status is not required, though premieres are highlighted in promotions — different from Florida-premiere-hard festivals already on the Gazette map.
- Foreign-language films and strong-dialect films need English subtitles.
- Submission fees are non-refundable.
- AI policy: festival welcomes tools as part of production but requires meaningful human authorship; films created primarily through AI-generated content without meaningful human creative direction are not eligible. If AI was used in a significant way, include a brief explanation in the cover letter.
- If selected, the film should not screen publicly in the immediate VBFF region for 30 days before or during the festival without prior approval.
- Selected delivery: 1080p or 4K; limited venue space for DCP; full delivery instructions on acceptance. Final materials due March 1, 2027 if selected.
- Notification on or before February 19, 2027.
Awards on the live listing (jury cash): Best Narrative Feature $300; Best Documentary Feature $300; Best Comedy / Dramatic / Documentary Short $150 each; Best Vero Visions Short $100; Best NextUp! Broward–Palm Beach feature / short shops — use Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, or the three short cards. Regular Standard $30 features / $25 shorts is the east-coast Treasure Coast room on the same fall calendar as your Miami and Fort Lauderdale clocks — different fees, different premiere rules (VBFF does not require premiere status).
Florida student programs (K–12 and university) — NEXT UP! Regular $10 / $7 Gold is the statewide student floor. Put FAU, Broward College, Palm Beach State, NSU, UM, FIU, and high-school media programs on the same October 15 card when the cut clears Florida enrollment rules and student ID.
Episodic / unconventional shops — Pilots Regular $30 for true pilots; Fringe Regular $30 for mid-length, experimental, music-video, or form-breaking work. Do not mask a pilot as a short to chase a cheaper short fee — the Pilots card exists for that reason.
