For a working artist, the next useful class or residency comes with two budgets: the price of attending and the cash needed before any support arrives. Miami-Dade's Artist Access program makes that second calculation worth doing now.

The county calendar lists an October 19 opening and November 23 deadline at 11:59 p.m. for spring 2027. Artists can request up to $2,000 in reimbursement.

Who Can Apply

The FY 2026-2027 guidelines require a working professional artist, age 18 or older, who is a legal full-time Miami-Dade resident and has lived and worked in the county for at least a year before the deadline. Applicants cannot be enrolled in high school or college.

The definition matters to South Florida's creative businesses. Professionals working with artists, including producers, curators, arts administrators and presenters, are excluded. The department's linked eligibility FAQ also identifies organizations and artist collectives as ineligible and includes media arts among the individual artistic disciplines supported. A production-company title alone does not establish eligibility.

Choose the Learning Opportunity First

The program description includes workshops, residencies, master-artist instruction, conferences and non-credit training. It excludes public exhibitions and performances, touring, and degree or certificate programs.

Start with the skill you need, then choose an opportunity that addresses it. A strong application can connect a specific learning gap to the instructor, curriculum and work the artist hopes to do afterward. General enthusiasm leaves the panel with less to assess than a clear account of why the timing and training matter.

Read the current-year guidelines before building an equipment budget. They exclude studio rent and equipment unrelated to professional development, while allowing specialized equipment required for the proposed opportunity. Broad equipment-shopping assumptions can send a budget in the wrong direction.

Build the Packet and the Cash Plan Together

The current application checklist calls for a CV, biography, opportunity details, applicable invitation or registration information, up to six work samples, a budget and two residency documents. Previous FY 2025-2026 awardees must wait one year before applying again.

Separate the costs you must pay to reserve a place from costs incurred during the activity. Keep the full opportunity cost visible even if the request reaches the $2,000 ceiling. That makes it easier to decide whether the plan works if the award is smaller than requested or no award arrives.

FUNDarte's program explanation describes its partnership with the county and payment after a final report. Keep receipts and payment records from the start rather than reconstructing expenses after the training ends.
